Biography
Marc Heal and Phil Barry, the pair behind the act Cubanate, examined a fusion of industrial music with techno's rapid pulses. The London-based project came together toward the end of 1992, featuring Heal on vocals, Barry on guitar, keyboardist Graham Rayner, and percussionist Steve Etheridge. Recording sessions began promptly, and the first live performance took place that same year, limited at the outset to Heal and Barry alone. Early in 1993 the group secured a deal with Berlin's Dynamica imprint, issuing the single "Bodyburn" shortly afterward. The track received strong notices, including Single of the Week honors from Kerrang!, yet Rayner and Etheridge departed soon after its release. Remixer and producer Julian Beeston joined briefly before Heal and Barry elected to proceed as a duo.
Their first full-length, Antimatter, surfaced in September 1993, followed by the Metal EP the next year. A 1994 British tour supporting Carcass drew intense backlash, complete with death threats and audience disturbances that prompted the London Evening Standard to claim the band had "provoked an outbreak of demented carnage." Toward the close of 1994 the single "Oxyacetylene" previewed the second album, Cyberia, which arrived in early 1995. For a subsequent tour alongside Front Line Assembly, Heal and Barry brought in guitarist Shep Ashton and keyboard player Darren Bennett, then reverted to the core duo format for the April 1996 release Barbarossa. Two years later Interference appeared on the TVT label.
