Biography
Christoph de Babalon, a visionary producer from Germany, forged an unrelentingly bleak fusion of hardcore drum'n'bass and dark ambience that became a primary influence on the breakcore scene. An early associate of Alec Empire's groundbreaking Digital Hardcore Recordings, he diverged from his labelmates' electronic update of anarchist punk by delving instead into apocalyptic cinematic soundscapes paired with immaculately crafted yet hellish breakbeats. His full-length debut, 1997's If You're Into It, I'm Out of It, stands as his signature work and Digital Hardcore's finest release. After departing the label, he stayed active with output on FatCat—including a 2000 split EP with Kid606—and on Tigerbeat6 via A Bond with Sorrow in 2012, while also composing for theater, notably the 2018 collaboration TEYAS with Warsaw-based duo WIDT.
Born Jan-Christoph Wolter in Hamburg, the producer adopted the name Christoph de Babalon and entered the scene with the 1994 EP Love Under Will, also known as I Own Death, the second release on the legendary hardcore label Fischkopf Hamburg. Influential British DJ John Peel counted the release among his favorites of the year. After two 1995 outings—a cassette and a split EP with Paul Snowden—on his own Cross Fade Enter Tainment imprint, he signed to Digital Hardcore in 1996. The EPs Destroy Berlin! and Seven Up came next, preceding the 1997 arrival of If You're Into It, I'm Out of It. Though somewhat overlooked initially, the album steadily built a cult following, as Thom Yorke declared it the most menacing record in his collection and countless breakcore producers drew from its punishing breakbeats and morose atmospheres.
De Babalon soon exited Digital Hardcore yet continued releasing, appearing on Drop Bass Network's Ghetto Safari sublabel with In a Bad Mood in 1998 and on Zhark International with Rise Above This in 1999, while also relocating to Berlin. He contributed to Tigerbeat6's infamous N.W.A tribute/desecration Attitude and shared a volume of FatCat's split 12" series with Kid606, both in 2000. Following his 2001 opening slot for Radiohead on the Amnesiac tour, he largely entered hiatus aside from his role in the short-lived duo Übergang alongside guitarist Christian Haudej. After a 2004 CD-R, the pair's only vinyl release, Fear Leader, surfaced on Detroit breakcore label Low Res Records in 2006.
In 2008 de Babalon revived Cross Fade Enter Tainment to issue the ambitious conceptual EP Scylla & Charybdis, inspired by Greek mythology. Limited editions contained the full-length CD Miniatures, while further copies added a mixtape. The EP A World of My Own arrived on Restroom Records in 2010. He then reconnected with Tigerbeat6, which put out the EP Traumspiel and the full-length A Bond with Sorrow in 2012. In 2014 he began The Haunting Past of Christoph de Babalon, Vol. 1, the first in a series of digital releases of rare and previously unreleased early material. Fresh works followed, including a 2015 split EP with Triames on Giallo Disco and the full-length Short Eternities on Love Love Records. The 12" EP Grim Zenith and the limited CD Live at Dance Affliction both appeared in May 2017.
If You're Into It, I'm Out of It received its first vinyl reissue in 2018. Positive press reaffirmed the album's classic status and drew a new generation of listeners. Later that year Bocian Records released TEYAS, de Babalon's operatic collaboration with Polish audiovisual duo WIDT. A Colourful Storm also compiled early material on the LP Exquisite Angst. The EP Hectic Shakes appeared on Alter in early 2019, and a split EP with Berlin-based DJ and producer Mark came out via A Colourful Storm in 2020. The same label issued Recurring Horrors, another collection of early tracks, later in 2020.
