Biography
Clawfinger originated in 1988 as a Scandinavian heavy metal quartet after Jocke Skog and Zak Tell first connected through their jobs at Rosenlunds Hospital near Stockholm. Bard Torstensson and Erlend Ottem completed the lineup in 1990, at which point the members recognized their overlapping musical tastes. Leisure hours after shifts gradually shifted toward informal experimentation with tracks and arrangements, allowing the project to coalesce into a functioning band.
Midway through the following decade the group issued its self-released debut Deaf Dumb Blind. Swedish reviewers hailed the singular merger of metal and hip-hop, and worldwide sales eventually exceeded 600,000 copies. Festival appearances accumulated across Europe at sites such as Holland’s Dynamo Festival, Denmark’s Roskilde, and Germany’s Rock in Reim, accompanied by a string of honors. Two of those prizes arrived at the 1994 Swedish Grammy Awards, where Clawfinger was named Best Hardrock Band and Best Video.
In 1995 the band completed its second album Use Your Brain. Steady road work sustained its profile, highlighted by a slot on Ozzy Osbourne’s Monsters of Rock Festival in South America alongside Megadeth, Faith No More, and Alice Cooper. After an extended respite the musicians returned in 1997 with their self-titled third record.
