By the time he reached 18, Colby O'Donis had already amassed substantial experience across multiple facets of show business as a singer, guitarist, pianist, songwriter, dancer, and actor, treating everyday surroundings like an ever-present platform for performance. Queens, New York City, provided the setting for his birth to Puerto Rican parents, and accounts indicate he was vocalizing well before acquiring speech. Relocation with his family to Florida at age eight coincided with his introduction to guitar, after which he began collaborating at nine with the production and songwriting team Full Force; that partnership yielded the track “Mouse in the House,” featured on the Stuart Little soundtrack. Regular acting appearances on the television series Grandpa's Garage followed at age 11. Two years later he was supporting concerts in Florida by the Backstreet Boys, Brian McKnight, and 98°. The move to Los Angeles at 15 brought sessions alongside Michael Jackson inside the latter’s studio, from which the single “Your Love in My Life” emerged. O’Donis subsequently joined Akon’s Konvict Muzic imprint under Interscope and issued the single “What You Got” in January 2008, followed by his self-titled debut album that September.
