Cowbell, a London duo blending rockabilly, R&B, garage rock, and blues, features Jack Sandham on vocals, guitar, and keyboards with Wednesday Lyle supplying percussion and vocals. The pair first connected in 2009 after Sandham, who had earlier fronted Great Bear and worked as a solo performer, heard that his longtime friend Lyle had started drumming. Their initial jam sessions revealed how her direct, uncluttered style meshed with his roots-oriented guitar lines, prompting them to form a unit that wrote a set of songs and played its first gig within a month. Summer 2010 brought their debut release, the 7" single "Oh Girl" on Stove Pony Records, which earned airplay on BBC 6 and XFM; later that year Too Pure Singles Club issued the follow-up "Never Satisfied." Strong radio response to the second single led Cast singer John Power to book them as openers after catching a live set. Spring 2011 saw the release of a third single, "Hanging by a Thread," on the band’s own Cool Jerk Records label. Positive reception for the early singles and a growing concert schedule attracted Damaged Goods, which issued the full-length debut Beat Stampede in October 2012. The 2014 album Skeleton Soul moved deeper into vintage New Orleans R&B territory, while the self-produced Haunted Heart, their third long-player, appeared in 2017 and contained the track "Nothing But Trouble," the first song by the duo to feature an actual cowbell.
