Biography
Emerging from Brazil's underground rock circuit in the early 2000s, CPM 22 grew into one of the nation's leading homegrown punk-pop outfits. The band formed in São Paulo in 1995 and adopted its name as the acronym for Caixa Postal Mil e Vinte e Dois, or P.O. Box 1022. Its members include vocalist Fernando Estéfano Badauí, known as Badauí and born in 1976, guitarists Luciano Garcia, referred to as Luciano and born in 1978, and Eduardo Ippolito Torrano Gomes, nicknamed Wally and born the same year, bassist Fernando Sanches Takara, aka Fernandinho and born in 1979, and drummer Ricardo di Roberto, called Japinha and born in 1973. Classic punk acts such as the Ramones and the Buzzcocks, punk-pop bands including Green Day and Pennywise, and alternative rock groups like Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins shaped their sound. After issuing a pair of demos in the late '90s, they released their independent debut album A Alguns Quilômetros de Lugar Nenhum in 2000. A 2001 contract with the short-lived yet prominent Brazilian label Abril Music brought forth CPM 22 in 2001 and Chegou a Hora de Recomeçar in 2002; both efforts yielded numerous hits such as "Regina Let's Go," "Tarde de Outubro," "O Mundo dá Voltas," "Desconfio," "Dias Atrás," and "Não Sei Viver Sem Ter Você," selling more than 150,000 and 180,000 copies respectively. By the time of the 2005 album Felicidade Instantânea, another strong seller that featured the hits "Irresversível" and "Um Minuto Para o Fim do Mundo," CPM 22 had aligned with Sony BMG and begun to draw backlash from longtime fans who accused the band of selling out amid its mainstream success. In 2006 the group answered with the hit single "Inevitável," crafted as a return to form in the form of punk without the pop, and simultaneously issued the live CD/DVD MTV ao Vivo featuring the track.
