Biography
Formed in 1996 by Jimmy London and Donida, the Brazilian hardcore punk outfit Matanza fused metal with country elements while focusing lyrical themes on drinking and fighting, a raucous approach the members themselves labeled "countrycore." Drawing equally from Johnny Cash and the Exploited, the group tracked its 1998 demo Terror em Dashville alongside drummer Nervosa and bassist Diba. China stepped in on bass for the Abril Music release of the debut full-length Santa Madre Cassino in 2001. After the album failed to produce a hit single, the label parted ways with the band, prompting a move to Deckdisc. The follow-up Música Para Beber e Brigar surfaced in 2003 with Fausto now handling drums. Matanza next delivered its complete tribute to the Man in Black, To Hell with Johnny Cash, in 2005 as the first Brazilian CD/DVD DualDisc. A more serious and professional tone marked the subsequent studio effort A Arte do Insulto. The 2008 live DVD MTV Apresenta Matanza introduced drummer Jonas and coincided with Donida withdrawing from the stage while continuing his studio and songwriting contributions; Maurício Nogueira assumed live guitar duties. Odiosa Natureza Humana, the fifth album, was captured live in the studio over three days and issued in 2011, with Thunder Dope arriving the next year. Pior Cenário Possível, the band’s seventh release and its first following bassist China’s exit, appeared in 2015.
