Lulacruza, the self-described “electronic folk” pair formed by Colombian vocalist, cuatro player, and percussionist Alejandra Ortiz alongside Argentinian electronics manipulator, charango performer, and percussionist Luis Marette, frequently blends their acoustic tools with digital textures and rhythms to produce a serene, mesmerizing effect. Though now rooted in Buenos Aires, the collaborators first connected while studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Beginning in 2006 with the self-issued Do Pretty!, they offered all of their recordings as flexible “pay what you want” downloads on the internet. Following the 2011 arrival of their third studio effort Circular Tejido, an extended hiatus from the studio ensued before they resumed activity several years afterward. Orcas emerged in 2015 after being tracked, at the behest of Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt, inside a facility located on the island sharing that title.
