The formation of the feminist indie pop trio Daddy Issues originated from an unexpected source in 2014. While attending a performance at Nashville, Tennessee's D.I.Y. venue known as the Farm, Jenna Moynihan noticed the words "Daddy Issues" scrawled prominently on a bathroom wall. Assuming this referred to a band that had performed there, Moynihan conducted searches that revealed no such act existed. This discovery prompted her to assemble her own group under that moniker, enlisting friends Emily Maxwell and Jenna Mitchell despite their limited instrumental backgrounds. Moynihan took on lead guitar duties along with vocals, Maxwell handled drums, and Mitchell played bass, creating a sound blending elements of punk, pop, and grunge. The group issued their debut single "Pizza Girl" during May 2014, followed by "Ugly When I Cry" in September. Attention from the Nashville indie label Infinity Cat Recordings came in the summer of 2015, leading to the release of their eight-song cassette Can We Still Hang through the label's subscription series. A formal agreement with Infinity Cat followed, resulting in a split single alongside White Reaper in December 2015. Extensive touring occupied much of 2016 and the beginning of 2017, including runs with Tacocat and Diet Cig, culminating in the May 2017 launch of their debut full-length album Deep Dream.
