Pianist Danny Driver maintains an unusually broad range of repertory, moving freely from Bach through Adès in programs that mix concertos with chamber music, familiar staples, and seldom-heard scores. His extensive Hyperion catalogue includes a 2021 recording of Ligeti’s infrequently documented 18 Etudes.

Born in London in 1977, Driver grew up with an amateur-violinist father; on his mother’s side he traces descent, shared with his wife, conductor Rebecca Miller, from Rabbi Israel ben Eliezer (ca. 1698-1760), founder of Hasidic Judaism. Childhood encouragement of his musical leanings was sharpened by repeated hearings of Dinu Lipatti’s classic account of Chopin’s waltzes. At the University of Cambridge he first read natural sciences, an experience he later credited with shaping his interpretive approach, before changing to music and continuing at the Royal College of Music in London. Two 2001 competition victories—at the Royal Over-Seas League and the BBC 2 Young Musician of the Year Competition—launched his professional trajectory. Early recitals at Wigmore Hall led to regular engagements with leading British orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, the BBC Scottish Symphony, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, later joined by appearances with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Queensland Symphony, Hong Kong Pro Arte, and other ensembles abroad. He has performed twice at the BBC Proms.

Driver’s programs frequently feature composers less often encountered, among them Mily Balakirev, Clara Schumann and additional women composers, and York Bowen, whose Piano Concerto No. 3 received its U.S. premiere from Driver and Miller in 2009. More than ten Hyperion albums document his work across a wide spectrum stretching from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach to Erik Chisholm; volume 70 of the label’s Romantic Piano Concertos series presented music by Amy Beach, Cécile Chaminade, and Dorothy Howell. With violinist Chloë Hanslip he recorded the complete Beethoven violin sonatas for Rubicon. The 2021 Ligeti Etudes disc appeared on Hyperion, and since 2016 Driver has taught piano at the Royal College of Music.
