Biography
Emerging from Charlotte, North Carolina in 1997, Darkmoon grew out of the earlier group Demonic Christ and centered primarily on vocalist and guitarist John Vesano. Operating at the intersection of death metal and black metal, the band presented its ferociously aggressive sound and vocal opposition to Christianity—without adopting Satanic themes—on a self-titled EP issued later that year. Once guitarist Chuck Drummond, bassist and vocalist Devon, and drummer Scott Pletcher joined, the lineup delivered its strongest work across two releases of exceptional speed and intensity: Vengeance for Withered Hearts in 1998 and Seas of Unrest in 1999. Those uncompromising explorations of sonic aggression ultimately reached only a limited circle of extreme metal listeners, prompting the group’s breakup after the 2001 .308 Antichrist EP so that Vesano could become bassist and part-time vocalist for death metal stalwarts Nile.
