Deny e Dino

Deny and Dino first crossed paths in Santos in 1956 while employed at the identical radio station. After Dino’s dismissal, Deny countered by threatening to resign as well, prompting management to retain Dino; the pair then launched the duo Os Boas Pintas and began appearing on radio programs and in clubs. The act debuted under the name Deny & Dino in 1966, scoring immediate attention with their own song “A Coruja,” which earned them the 8th Chico Viola prize as one of the year’s outstanding releases.

During the height of Jovem Guarda the pair became familiar faces on the era’s leading television programs, including Jovem Guarda itself, and supplied material to fellow movement figures such as Demétrius (“Comendador Mesquita”) and Erasmo Carlos (“Eu Não Me Importo”). In 1968 their single “O Ciúme” moved an unprecedented 200,000 copies and held the top chart position for 22 weeks. Following the close of the Jovem Guarda period they returned to the charts in 1969 with “Shut Up.” Two further hits arrived in 1975—“O Maior Golpe do Mundo” (Marcos Lago/Dino Rossi) and “Cantem Comigo.” Dino passed away in 1994, yet Deny sustained the act’s legacy amid the 30-year commemorations of Jovem Guarda by issuing a retrospective compilation and cutting the new album Essencial with a replacement partner who performed under the stage name Dino.
