In 1997 the folk ensemble Die Mayrhofner originated in Austria’s Zillertal as a three-member unit. When that configuration disbanded, the heroically mustachioed singer and violinist Erwin Aschenwald assembled a successor lineup that included his sons Erwin Aschenwald, Jr. on accordion, keyboards, and vocals and Michael Aschenwald on drums, together with guitarists Thomas Partl and Ulli Huber. Their first recording under the revised roster, Halli Galli, surfaced in 2000 and established the group as a fixture that thereafter produced at least one album almost annually, its wholly genuine and unadulterated Tyrolean folk sound arising from sincere devotion to heritage rather than commercial calculation.
