In the opening months of 1991 the alternative pop/rock band Dig assembled in Los Angeles. Vocalist and guitarist Scott Hackwith, who had produced sessions for the Ramones, shared duties with guitarists Dix Denney, previously of the Weirdos and Thelonious Monster, and Jon Morris, while Phil Friedmann played bass and Matt Tecu handled drums. Local support grew after the 1992 appearance of the Runt EP, prompting the quintet to sign with Radioactive/MCA before the year ended. Their self-titled debut album arrived in 1993. Nearly three months of exposure in MTV’s Buzz Bin for the single “Believe” directly led to the mid-1996 release of the follow-up Defenders of the Universe. Life Like appeared in early 1999. Guitarist Dix Denney died March 10, 2023, at age 65.
