From the modest Norwegian community of Svelvik, situated southwest of Oslo in a region that has nevertheless produced several notable figures in electronic music, Joachim Dyrdahl records under the name diskJokke. His productions range from driving acid-house rhythms suited to crowded floors to atmospheric, filmic pop suited to relaxed listening. He began violin lessons at age five and took up DJing by fourteen. After completing a mathematics degree at a Trondheim university, he moved to Oslo and began merging his classical training with electro-disco influences in the studio. There he connected with Prins Thomas, who issued two of his tracks as 12-inch singles on the Full Pupp label. Momentum led Get Physical to release two additional singles through its Kindish subsidiary. Dyrdahl became resident DJ at one of Norway’s leading clubs and contributed a track to the Sunkissed compilation, which in turn generated remix commissions. One such project introduced him to Smalltown Supersound, the label associated with Lindstrøm, an artist Dyrdahl has long cited among his chief inspirations. The label selected ten of his strongest grooves and issued his debut album, Staying In, in Norway in late 2007 and internationally in February 2008. Later that year Vice Records put out his eleven-minute rework of Bloc Party’s “Sunday.” In 2010 he followed with the album En Fin Tid. Seeking a fresh direction, Dyrdahl accepted a commission from Norway’s Øye Festival in 2011 and traveled to Indonesia, where he recorded the conceptual album Sagara alongside local Gamelan musicians.
