Wisconsin indie rock outfit Disq originated among a circle of childhood friends who began playing together in their teenage years, channeling early fixations on power pop and time-honored songcraft into a taut, nervy indie approach. Their debut for Saddle Creek, the 2020 album Collector, wove together strands of post-punk, psych-folk, and melodic pop, a fusion that grew even more cohesive on the lively follow-up Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet, issued in 2022.

The group’s foundation rests on the bond between Isaac deBroux-Slone and Raina Bock, who shared a hometown upbringing amid households steeped in creativity and the arts. After picking up multiple instruments and absorbing the pop blueprints of the Beatles alongside the alt-rock entry points supplied by Weezer, the pair launched Disq while still in their early teens. Bock handled bass and backing vocals while deBroux-Slone took lead vocals and guitar; together they produced and issued the Disq I EP on their own in 2016.

In subsequent years the lineup expanded with the addition of guitarist Logan Severson, drummer Brendan Manley, and guitarist/keyboardist Shannon Connor. All five members took part in the songwriting process as the band performed locally in Madison and appeared at South by Southwest in 2019, later supporting U.K. punk outfit Shame on tour. The resulting attention prompted Saddle Creek to sign Disq and release Collector as their first full-length album in March 2020. Over the following two years the ensemble matured into a more egalitarian collective whose shared vocal and compositional duties yielded vivid results. Tracking took place across sessions in Los Angeles and Madison alongside producer Matt Schuessler, whose prior credits include Kurt Vile and Joyce Manor, and the finished sophomore album Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet surfaced in October 2022.
