San Francisco's East Bay region has long nurtured melodic pop-punk outfits, and Divit emerged as one such group from suburban Antioch in the late '90s. The quartet of Rich Brinkerhoff on guitar and vocals, Marshall Leonardy on bass, Mick Leonardy handling vocals and guitar, plus Nick White behind the drums, entered the local scene with a style echoing California skatepunk acts such as Pennywise and Lagwagon. After surfacing on multiple compilations and in Thrasher videos, the band issued the EP Latest Issue through Bay Area imprint Coldfront Records in January 2000, then delivered the full-length Tension half a year afterward. October 2001 saw the arrival of the split Double Letter Score alongside Santa Rosa's Diesel Boy, and following their slot on the 2002 Warped Tour, September brought the Nitro debut Broadcaster. That release carried a denser sonic profile than earlier efforts while signaling a shift toward greater maturity, prompting likenesses to Jawbreaker, Foo Fighters, and Jimmy Eat World.
