In Norwegian chart annals, Donkeyboy remain the sole ensemble ever to displace their own track from the summit, underscoring the five-piece electro-pop group’s stature among Scandinavia’s leading pop exports of the late 2000s. Assembled in Drammen, Norway during 2005, the lineup unites brothers Cato Sundberg on vocals and guitar with Kent Sundberg on synth, alongside guitarist Peter Michelsen, bassist Alexander Garborg Agedal, and drummer Thomas Drablos. Drawing from the sounds of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and the Pet Shop Boys, the musicians attracted the attention of a Warner Music executive via MySpace and secured a deal with the label in 2008. Their debut release, “Ambitions,” topped the Norwegian singles chart for twelve consecutive weeks the following year before yielding to its successor, “Sometimes”; both tracks appeared on the band’s first album, Caught in a Life, and the former was subsequently recorded by X-Factor winner Joe McElderry. The group earned a nomination for Best Norwegian Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards, collected four Spellemannprisen nominations, and opened for a-ha during the Foot of the Mountain tour. Their second album, Silver Moon, arrived in 2012 and reached number two on the Norwegian albums chart, propelled by the airplay successes “City Boy” and “Pull of the Eye.”
