Pronounced like the word "detective," DTCV formed as an indie rock duo in Joshua Tree, California, built around French singer/songwriter Lola G. and American guitarist James Greer. Greer's long involvement in music stretches to the early '90s, beginning with his role as senior editor and writer at Spin Magazine before he joined Guided by Voices amid the band's influential mid-'90s period. Before establishing DTCV he had already authored multiple novels and screenplays. The pair first crossed paths at a Hollywood party, after which they combined their stockpiled original material and drew from stoner rock, garage, post-punk, and classic indie sources, surfacing in 2012 with the debut LP However Strange. The following year brought the double album Hilarious Heaven, while 2014 saw the release of The Early Year, a collection gathering their initial singles and EPs. Maintaining an active schedule of touring and songwriting, DTCV delivered their third full studio album, Uptime!, in early 2015. One year afterward came Confusion Moderne, whose lyrics were written entirely en français and whose production was handled by psych wizard Joel Jerome.
