Biography
Eamon came across as the profane sibling of Justin Timberlake while aiming squarely at the chitlin circuit, landing an improbable Top 20 pop hit near the close of 2003 with his first single, “Fuck It (I Don’t Want You Back).” That raw, throwback R&B ballad proved potent enough to push its accompanying full-length, I Don’t Want You Back (2004), to gold status. Subsequent label arrangements repeatedly collapsed, leaving the singer, songwriter, and arranger a prime candidate for any retrospective on 2000s one-hit wonders—especially since his breakthrough anticipated CeeLo Green’s “Fuck You”—yet he has sustained a career spanning more than twenty years with later, more polished yet equally assured efforts such as Golden Rail Motel (2017) and No Matter the Season (2022).
Born in Staten Island, Eamon Doyle began singing early alongside his father’s doo-wop ensemble. In his mid-teens he secured studio employment, where manager Nat Robinson—founder of First Priority Music—along with rapper and producer Milk Dee, formerly of Audio Two, and producer Mark Passy recognized and cultivated his abilities. Robinson secured him a Jive contract, and Eamon introduced himself to listeners with “Fuck It (I Don’t Want You Back)” at the tail end of 2003. Penned by Eamon, Milk, and Passy, the track climbed to number 16 on the Hot 100 and performed even more strongly abroad, reaching the summit in the U.K., Germany, Italy, Australia, and additional markets. Its parent album, I Don’t Want You Back, bowed at number seven on the Billboard 200 in February 2004 and earned gold certification the following month, while the single itself later received its own gold nod.
Eamon stayed closely aligned with Robinson and Milk for his next Jive project, Love & Pain, which also included contributions from V. Jeffrey Smith, Happy Perez, and Needlz; the set surfaced in December 2006 exclusively outside the United States. That same month Ghostface Killah—who had appeared on Eamon’s debut—issued More Fish, spotlighting Eamon on the cut “Gotta Hold On.” After parting ways with Jive within a few years, Eamon shifted primarily to behind-the-scenes work, supplying background vocals on Shafiq Husayn’s Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka while moving to Los Angeles. A follow-up solo agreement unraveled, stranding another album. Over the ensuing decade he surfaced on recordings by R.A. the Rugged Man, Jedi Mind Tricks, and others before issuing his third album, Golden Rail Motel, in 2017, co-executive produced by Jedi Mind Tricks’ Vinnie Paz. Five years afterward he returned with No Matter the Season on Now-Again, drawing samples from African recordings the label had earlier reissued.
