Eleanor Tomlinson, an English performer recognized equally for her screen work and her musical output, first gained widespread attention through her portrayal of Demelza Poldark in the British-American period drama Poldark, which premiered in 2015. Born in London in 1992, she relocated with her family to Yorkshire during childhood. An early affinity for the arts led her to distinguish herself in stage productions and theater classes throughout secondary school, after which she transitioned into professional acting while still completing her studies. Her initial significant screen credit arrived in 2006 with the American mystery feature The Illusionist, where she embodied the youthful incarnation of Jessica Biel’s character Sophie. Two years later she appeared in the coming-of-age comedy Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging, followed in 2010 by a role as one of the Cathaway sisters in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Greater visibility came in 2013 via the action-adventure film Jack the Giant Slayer and the British television productions Death Comes to Pemberley and The White Queen. The subsequent year she shared the screen with Stephen Rea in the science-fiction picture The Curse of Styria. Additional film work included a 2016 turn in the thriller Alleycats and voice portrayal of Adeline in the 2017 animated biographical drama Loving Vincent, which examined the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Tomlinson’s debut album, the 2018 Sony Masterworks release Tales from Home, assembled folk-inflected interpretations of material by Carole King and Simon & Garfunkel; English film-score composer and conductor Anne Dudley produced the collection.
