Biography
Rae Morris, a British singer and songwriter, first began composing tunes during her teenage years in Blackpool, her hometown. A TV appearance by Karima Francis, another resident of Blackpool, sparked her interest, prompting Morris to start creating her music. Her powerful yet warm voice combined with subtly catchy piano-driven folk-pop quickly caught attention, resulting in a contract from Atlantic Records at the age of 18. Rather than rushing her development, the label allowed Morris to experiment gradually over several years with individual releases as she pursued her studies at college. Tracks such as "Don't Go" and "Grow" paved the way for the 2013 EP From Above.
In 2014 she collaborated on her first album with Ariel Rechtshaid, known for work with HAIM, Vampire Weekend, and Charli XCX, issuing additional EPs ahead of the project. Her initial long-form release, Unguarded, appeared via Atlantic in 2015. Following extensive tours and songwriting sessions, she prepared her second album Someone Out There, which came out in 2018 and explored more electronic styles. Working alongside producer Fryars on the record led to a personal connection; the pair later shared a home and welcomed a child. Morris parted ways with Atlantic in 2019 to join RCA, which issued her third LP Rachel@Fairyland two years later. Crafted domestically alongside Fryars and Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas, then balanced by Shawn Everett, the effort aimed "to sound like an old film" through its hazy vintage atmosphere featuring harps, strings, plus additional orchestral elements. Drawing from her youthful online username, the album was previewed by singles "No Woman Is an Island" and "Running Shoes."
