Biography
Alice Jemima, a guitarist and singer/songwriter who developed her skills without formal instruction, began composing material at twelve. During her time at a Devon comprehensive, a work placement at Glastonbury reinforced her determination to pursue music professionally, prompting focused efforts to refine her style once she entered college. There she received the Helen Foundation Best Endeavour Award, which led to sessions with producer Andy Chatterley. Blending her classical guitar technique with looped beats and understated electronica, she issued her debut self-released EP, the four-track All the Boyfriends, in 2012 while regularly posting tracks online. A 2014 cover of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” drew the interest of BBC Radio 1 presenter, Bestival founder, and Sunday Best label head Rob Da Bank. After arranging a Maida Vale session for her, Da Bank placed Jemima on his roster. Her initial output for the label, the mid-2016 EP Liquorice, preceded work on a full-length project with producer Roy Kerr, known for his contributions to Foxes and Bloc Party. The first result of those recordings, the single “Dodged a Bullet,” surfaced in September, followed months later by “Electric.” Her self-titled debut album appeared in early 2017. Following a two-year hiatus, Jemima resurfaced in April 2019 with the singles “Icarus” and “Dancing in Love,” both written alongside Sophie Ellis-Bextor; the tracks later appeared on her second album, Everything Changes, issued that October.
