Biography
Emil Amos maintains an extensive output as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, channeling efforts across projects that range from avant-garde folk and heavy psychedelia to cinematic electronic music. He expanded his longstanding Holy Sons from an initial lo-fi home-recording endeavor into a more produced and expansive ensemble through a series of exploratory releases that began in the early 2000s. At the same time Amos established the instrumental post-rock band Grails, whose increasingly expansive sound has come to draw on progressive rock, dub, Italian film scores, and additional styles. During the 2000s he also became a member of the folky indie rock band Dolorean and the spiritually informed stoner rock band OM, while further performing and recording alongside artists such as Jandek, Scout Niblett, and Jessica Lea Mayfield. With Lilacs & Champagne he pursued trip-hop and instrumental hip-hop, and he issued two soundtrack-inspired solo albums, Filmmusik (2017) and Zone Black (2023).
As a grade school student Emil Amos received piano lessons and began playing drums. Skateboarding and the hardcore scene captured his attention, leading him to record and perform with local bands in Chapel Hill, North Carolina around the period when Merge Records was founded. In 1992 he launched Holy Sons as a solo singer/songwriter outlet, capturing hundreds of songs for personal therapeutic purposes. From this extensive archive he assembled his debut album, the aptly named Lost Decade in 2000, and maintained a steady stream of further releases. Following his move to Portland, Oregon, he assembled the group Laurel Canyon, which soon adopted the name Grails. The ensemble issued its first album, The Burden of Hope, in 2003 while performing instrumental post-rock shaped by Eastern modalities. Holy Sons frequently opened for Grails, and both projects increasingly turned to studio exploration for their more ambitious and experimental later recordings. Amos contributed guitar to the Portland-based group Dolorean and played drums for several of Jandek’s initial Pacific Northwest performances in 2006. He joined Al Cisneros’ group OM in 2008, making his first appearance on God Is Good in 2009.
Amos and fellow Grails member Alex John Hall formed the beat-driven instrumental project Lilacs & Champagne, merging live instrumentation with hip-hop breaks and samples. Their self-titled album appeared in 2012 and was succeeded by three further releases, among them two volumes of Midnight Features. Amos sustained his creation of cinematically inspired music through the solo release Filmmusik, issued by Pelagic Records in 2017. He also performed on bass and keyboards in Alyeska, the indie pop group founded by singer/songwriter Alaska Reid. Throughout this time he continued issuing albums with both Holy Sons and Grails while receiving a commission to record for the legendary KPM music library; that material ultimately shaped his second solo album, Zone Black, released by Drag City in 2023.
