Biography
Boston-based collective Sunburned Hand of the Man emerged in 1994 from the trio Shit Spangled Banner, which counted John Moloney and Robert Thomas among its members and took shape as what Moloney described as "a cross between the Melvins and Sonic Youth." The project quickly absorbed an expanding circle of collaborators who gathered at the loft, folding in elements that stretched from early American folk music through drone, free jazz, space rock, and funk. Following the lone release issued under the original name, 1996's No Dolby No DBX on Ecstatic Yod's Ass Run series, Moloney and Thomas steered the renamed Sunburned Hand of the Man through a fluid roster that produced a steady stream of limited-edition CD-Rs on the band's own Manhand imprint, among them Mind of a Brother in 1997 and Piff's Clicks in 1998.
Throughout the mid-'90s and into the wooly freak-folk years of the 2000s, the loose assemblage stood as New England's representative in free rock, its frequent low-key recordings spanning untethered improvisatory explorations and more structured efforts. Jaybird in 2001 marked a clear advance, binding those disparate strands into a coherent statement, at a moment when parallel outfits such as Jackie-O Motherfucker, Tower Recordings, and the No-Neck Blues Band—sometimes viewed as a sister group—were also attracting notice. The phrase "free folk" gained currency as a label for this wave, which drew from Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music as readily as from avant-jazz and noise ensembles, and Sunburned were widely regarded as leaders or co-leaders of the movement. Subsequent self-released works on CD-R and vinyl, including Wild Animal in 2001, Headdress in 2002, and Trickle Down Theory of Lord Knows What in 2003, offered rough yet incisive snapshots of the band's evolving direction.
Visibility rose sharply in August 2003 when the collective appeared on the cover of Wire magazine beneath the banner "New Weird America." Momentum carried through the mid- to late 2000s with a torrent of limited editions and live documents alongside more deliberate albums such as the 2005 double LP Wedlock and 2007's Z. Collaboration with Four Tet's Kieran Hebden yielded both Fire Escape in 2007 and A in 2010, introducing ambient shadings to the typically sprawling improvisations. Activity dipped during the early 2010s before regaining traction in 2019 with fresh minor releases and the fuller statement Headless. Frequent guitarist Marc Orleans died on June 25, 2020, at age 52. The following year saw the arrival of Pick a Day to Die, assembled from unreleased recordings made between 2007 and 2017.
