Eternal Summers came together in Roanoke, Virginia, toward the end of the 2000s as a self-described “dream punk” group built around guitarist/vocalist Nicole Yun and drummer Daniel Cundiff. Both musicians already belonged to the Magic Twig Community, the area’s art and indie-pop collective. Their music centered on compact, melody-driven pieces that drew from post-rock and no-wave traditions, shifting between ethereal textures and bursts of noise. The duo issued a self-titled EP in 2009 and followed it the next year with their first full-length effort for Kanine Records, Silver.

While supporting that album on the road, Yun’s guitar was stolen; the substitute instrument she used failed to supply the low-end presence the songs required. To correct the imbalance, the pair recruited longtime acquaintance Jonathan Woods on bass. The expanded trio tracked their next album in two weeks, then sent the mixes to Sune Rose Wagner of the Raveonettes and to Alonzo Vargas. Kanine issued the resulting Correct Behavior in July 2012.

For the band’s subsequent release, production and occasional guitar work came from indie-rock veteran Doug Gillard. The Drop Beneath appeared in early 2014 and signaled a further advance in the group’s creative development. Their fourth album, Gold and Stone, arrived the following year and was produced entirely by the band itself.
