Absurdist standup Eugene Mirman emerged as a central figure in New York City’s alternative comedy scene, building a devoted audience among indie rock listeners through opening slots for Yo La Tengo, the Shins, and Modest Mouse. Born in the Soviet Union in 1974, he arrived in the U.S. at age four when his family settled in Boston. After completing studies at Hampshire College, where he created a self-designed comedy major, Mirman began performing standup at intimate Boston spots such as the Green Street Grill and moved to New York City in 2000. Among the earliest comedians to treat the Internet as an artistic outlet, he gained widespread notice via eugenemirman.com, which showcased the Marvelous Crooning Child—an animated rendering of Mirman as a toddler singing classic rock hits—alongside numerous short films. Multimedia segments quickly became integral to his live performances, leading to the 2004 debut album The Absurd Nightclub Comedy of Eugene Mirman, issued as a combined CD/DVD set. Mirman bypassed conventional comedy clubs for indie rock spaces, frequently supporting bands and the Stella troupe alike. Alongside Bobby Tisdale and Holly Schlesinger, he organized the weekly alt-comedy variety series Invite Them Up, then issued his first Sub Pop release, En Garde, Society!, in spring 2006. The label followed with God Is a Twelve Year Old Boy with Asperger’s in 2009. Mirman joined the animated series Bob’s Burgers in 2011, supplying the voice of Gene Belcher. He next released An Evening of Comedy in a Fake Underground Laboratory in 2013 and I’m Sorry (You’re Welcome) in 2015.
