Identical twins have seldom carved out space in the long tradition of sibling acts that shaped folk, country, and pop, yet Atlanta natives Evan and Jaron Lowenstein found their moment at the millennium’s start with their gift for tuneful pop. Billed simply as Evan & Jaron, the pair notched a 2000 success with “Crazy for This Girl” and issued several additional singles that made less impact. Eventually the brothers stepped away to devote themselves to raising children, though Jaron Lowenstein reemerged in 2009 as a country performer.

Raised in Georgia, both received Discmans on the occasion of their bar mitzvah. The gift sparked an intense engagement with music, above all the melodic folk-pop modeled by Simon & Garfunkel. While attending college they began playing local venues and steadily built a following through repeated appearances at KaLo’s Coffee House. Their self-released 1995 set Live at KaLo’s Coffee House sold well regionally and helped generate early industry interest. In 1997 they secured a deal with Island Records.

The duo’s first major-label effort, We’ve Never Heard of You Either, arrived in spring 1998 and drew scant notice, yet the self-titled follow-up—issued on Columbia—finally broke through in 2000. For a stretch Evan & Jaron received substantial radio exposure when “Crazy for This Girl” climbed into the Top 20, even as their observance of Orthodox Judaism kept them from weekend performances. Live work stopped once Evan chose to start a family, after which the group issued an EP in 2004 and then disbanded.
