Evans The Death

Hailing from London, Evans the Death channels pop instincts through a fractured post-punk perspective. The quartet consists of vocalist and keyboardist Katherine Whitaker, guitarists Dan Moss and Olly Moss, bassist Lan McCardle (who succeeded Matt Gill), and drummer Rob Mitson. Formed in the capital, the group took its name from the undertaker in Dylan Thomas's radio drama and stage play Under Milk Wood. Their first recording appeared in May 2011 as the Threads 7" on Fortuna Pop, highlighting Whitaker's assertive delivery and the ensemble's propulsive momentum, which secured plays on BBC radio plus Xposure Big One recognition from the XFM network. The follow-up single Telling Lies came out in March 2012 via Slumberland. Their self-titled debut album, tracked the prior summer under Rory Atwell (Veronica Falls, Male Bonding, the Vaccines), surfaced on Slumberland in May 2012. Over the subsequent years the members navigated fractured relationships, joblessness, and financial hardship while again collaborating with Atwell on a new record. The resulting effort, darker and wider in musical range, appeared as Expect Delays in early 2015.

Before starting work on the following album, McCardle and Mitson had exited, replaced respectively by Daniel Raphael and James Burkitt. Once more pairing with Atwell, the band chose to capture material swiftly and together in one room on 8-track tape alone. This approach yielded a sound markedly removed from indie pop and instead shaped by the abrasive force and stance of U.K. post-punk. Their third album, Vanilla, emerged on Fortuna Pop! in June 2016.
