London-based alternative rock quartet Gengahr originated when friends met while enrolled at Stoke Newington School in Hackney. The lineup includes bassist Hugh Schulte, drummer Danny Ward, and guitarists Felix Bushe and John Victor. Initially operating under the name RES, the musicians adopted Gengahr after discovering another ensemble already used the same title. In 2014 they cut a demo that spread rapidly, attracting notice from listeners, bookers, and radio programmers. Their first album, A Dream Outside, appeared in 2015 on Transgressive Records and drew broad critical praise for its somber take on dreamy shoegaze and refreshed take on British-bred indie rock. The quartet supported the release with tours throughout the UK and Europe, then turned to recording a follow-up. Where Wilderness Grows, their second LP, reached listeners in late 2017. The London four-piece resurfaced in 2020 with the independently issued Sanctuary, reclaiming their original D.I.Y. methods.
