Biography
Folly Group emerged from the U.K. by folding sharp, rhythm-driven post-punk elements into moody, atmospheric art-rock compositions. The London quartet, which rotates several vocalists and drummers among its members, first attracted widespread online attention through its January 2021 debut single “Fashionista.” Later that year the group issued the Awake and Hungry EP, followed in 2022 by the tense, off-kilter Human and Kind EP, whose jagged everyday-life tirades carried the same unsettled energy into the self-produced full-length Down There!, released in January 2024.
Guitarist and vocalist Louis Milburn, drummer and vocalist Sean Harper, drummer and percussionist Kai Akinde-Hummel, and bassist Tom Doherty founded the band in the British capital in 2019. Intent on articulating feelings of disconnection, they drew from post-punk, synth-pop, trip-hop, and Afro-Cuban grooves when they recorded “Fashionista.” The track accumulated hundreds of thousands of streams, prompting So Young Records to release six additional songs as the Awake and Hungry EP that June. BBC Radio 6 Music airplay, a September 2021 collaboration with Metronomy and Brian Nasty on the track “Monday,” endorsements from British outlets, and approval from Idles’ Joe Talbot all increased their visibility, leading to appearances at Latitude, Pitchfork London, and other festivals.
For the follow-up EP Human and Kind the band switched to Technicolour Records/Ninja Tune; the nervy, groove-heavy record arrived in March 2022. Its release secured support slots with Orlando Weeks, first-time performances at Glastonbury and SXSW, and an inaugural headline tour. In 2023 Folly Group returned to So Young Records, issued singles such as “Strange Neighbor,” and joined Brooklyn’s Geese on the road before unveiling their debut album Down There! the following January.
