PVA blends elements of dance, industrial, and post-punk into tracks that carry a queer perspective alongside an insistent forward drive. The group first gained attention through high-energy performances across south London venues, refining their approach until the release of the Toner EP in 2020, whose Mura Masa remix of the track “Talks” received a Grammy nomination. Their 2022 album Blush built on that foundation by sharpening the propulsive textures and adding depth to the lyrical content.

Multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Ella Harris and Josh Baxter crossed paths via shared contacts in the south London scene yet only formed a bond during a 2017 party conversation. Recognizing strong musical overlap, they began collaborating, pairing Baxter’s “country-fried techno” sketches with Harris’s lyrics drawn from dreams; their debut performance occurred at a multimedia event just fourteen days after the project began. The pair initially appeared with pre-recorded beats before inviting drummer Louis Satchell—who grew up immersed in funk and soul before embracing dance music—to complete the lineup.

Once established, PVA earned recognition in London through dynamic support slots for acts such as Squid. That connection introduced them to Speedy Wunderground, which put out their first single, the Dan Carey-produced “Divine Intervention,” near the end of 2019. Positive response to both the recording and their shows secured a deal with Ninja Tune, leading to the November 2020 release of the Carey-helmed Toner EP. Its single “Talks” yielded a Mura Masa remix that earned a 2022 Grammy nomination in the Best Remixed Recording category.

Pandemic restrictions brought touring to a standstill, prompting each member to explore individual paths: Harris turned to poetry, honed production techniques, and issued solo work under the name Lime Zoda; Baxter took on production duties for other artists; and Satchell examined African polyrhythms at City University. Amid these pursuits they continued shaping their first full-length record, eventually gathering at co-producer Jamie Neville’s home studio for an intensive two-week session that also involved Ben Romans-Hopcraft. Issued in October 2022, Blush displayed a matured strain of the trio’s electro-rock energy that captured the uneasy atmosphere of the early pandemic years.
