Biography
For Squirrels came together in Gainesville, Florida, during 1992. Jack Vigliatura IV handled vocals, Travis Tooke played guitar, Jay Russell sat behind the drums, and Bill White covered bass in the initial configuration that gigged throughout the local scene before issuing Baypath Rd in the first months of 1994. East Coast touring followed, along with the EP Plymouth, which paved the way for a deal with Sony/550 Music. Russell then exited, Jack Greigo took over on drums, and the reconfigured lineup tracked its major-label debut, Example, in the middle of 1995.
Tragedy struck on September 8 when the band’s van suffered a blowout and flipped during the return drive to Florida after a performance at CBGB’s in New York. Vigliatura, White, and manager Tim Bender lost their lives, while Tooke and Greigo sustained injuries. Example appeared weeks later and earned strong airplay on college stations. Heartened by the response, Tooke and Greigo carried on, bringing in high school friend Andy Lord to play bass.
