Born Vincento de Marcos on October 18, 1978, in Berlin-Tempelhof, Germany, Frauenarzt spent the late ’90s carving out a reputation as a hardcore rapper whose Miami bass–infused tracks and explicit lyrics circulated widely through the city’s underground. After roughly ten years of steady activity in that scene, he broke into the mainstream with the Top Ten single “Das Geht Ab” in 2009. In 1998 he and DJ Manny Marc established the Bassboxxx label and gathered a loose collective of like-minded Berlin MCs known as the Bass Crew, whose members included MC Basstard, King Orgasmus, Mach One, MC Bogy, and others; German rap superstar Bushido maintained a peripheral connection to the group during this period. Bassboxxx’s inaugural release was the 1999 cassette BC, a Frauenarzt project that showcased several of his Bass Crew associates. Additional solo efforts issued on the label followed in quick succession—Untergrund Solo (2000), Tanga Tanga (2000), and Porno Party (2002)—with the most notable tracks from those years later anthologized on Bassboxxx: Greatest Hits 1998-2003 (2003). Frauenarzt’s profile rose further in the mid-2000s after German authorities seized the 2006 collaboration Porno Mafia, recorded with King Orgasmus, on grounds of its explicit material; the resulting publicity helped drive interest in his next solo album, Dr. Sex (2007). Shortly afterward he and Manny Marc created the Atzen Musik imprint in partnership with Kontor Records, releasing the various-artists compilation Atzen Musik, Vol. 1 (2008) that yielded the singles “Florida Lady” and the chart-topping “Das Geht Ab.”
