Biography
Canadian songwriters Kathryn Calder and Mark Andrew Hamilton debuted their warmly detailed indie pop project Frontperson in 2018 via the album Frontrunner, a release that showcased melodic hooks and harmonic interplay. Their 2022 follow-up Parade expanded on this foundation with further refinements to the same approach.
Calder, who has issued multiple solo albums, remains most recognized for her role in the acclaimed Vancouver indie rock band the New Pornographers, whereas Hamilton has centered his efforts on the Woodpigeon project since the mid-2000s. A spontaneous encounter in a recording studio hallway led the pair to pledge collaboration in a future band. Their shared strengths in melodic, atmospheric pop and intricate arrangements produced a cohesive sound that occasionally echoed their main endeavors while charting fresh territory.
Enlisting producer Colin Stewart, whose credits include the Cave Singers and Dan Mangan, Frontperson assembled supporting players drummer Melissa McWilliams, bassist Jen Sévertson of Peach Pyramid, cellist Clea Foofat from Raleigh and Dojo Workhorse, violinist Foon Yap, and percussionist Marek Tyler of nêhiyawak. The resulting debut Frontrunner appeared in September 2018 through Calder’s Oscar St. Records label. The duo tracked their second album Parade amid the COVID-19 pandemic on Vancouver Island before its April 2022 release; the record again employed Sévertson and McWilliams on rhythm duties and blended beguiling synth-driven pop with thoughtful songwriting.
