Emerging from the post-punk realm, Frustration carved out a prominent position within France’s underground music circuit through their intense fusion of punk fury, angular guitar lines, piercing new wave synthesizers, and coldwave melodic structures. Shifting between French and English vocals, the band kept their approach stripped-down and direct on the 2004 debut EP before adopting a sleeker yet ominous atmosphere for the 2008 full-length Relax. A warmer, guitar-centric palette shaped 2016’s Empires of Shame, while pointed lyrics addressing global instability marked 2024’s Our Decisions.

The five members—lead singer Fabrice Gilbert, guitarist Nicus Duteil, bassist Emmanuel Blevarque, keyboardist Fred Campo, and drummer Mark Adolf—launched the group in 2002, each originating from Paris suburbs. Several had prior shared history: Gilbert, Blevarque, and Adolf previously played in the Oi!-influenced Les Teckels, whereas Duteil, Blevarque, and Campo had been part of both the garage punk outfit Steve and the Jerks and the Pebbles Vol. 6 Tribute Team. After refining their material for two years, they issued the self-titled EP on their own Blind Records imprint; Manic Depression later handled its re-release the following year. In 2006 Adolf co-founded the French post-punk label Born Bad, promptly signing Frustration, who delivered the five-song EP Full of Sorrow that same year. Their debut album, Relax, arrived two years later.

Uncivilized, released in 2012, expanded their audience when the album moved more than 10,000 copies in France with scant promotion or coverage, while European club dates routinely sold out. Blevarque exited in 2015; Patrice Dambrine joined in time to contribute to the third album, Empires of Shame. Extensive European touring alongside Sleaford Mods fostered a close bond, leading to guest vocals from Mods ranter Jason Williamson on 2019’s So Cold Streams. Despite their refusal to dilute their sound or schedule and the competing demands of jobs and family life, the band reconvened to record 2024’s Our Decisions.
