Gangsta Blac

Considered for years among Memphis's leading MCs, Gangsta Blac stayed confined to underground circles until he emerged from the South during the opening years of the 2000s. He launched his path inside the Memphis-rooted Three 6 Mafia collective and then shifted to solo work in the mid-'90s. Drawing from the stark street narratives of Eightball & MJG and the Geto Boys, his sound merges the dark worldview of gangsta rap with Southern flavor and boisterous Dirty South production. The hit single "Southern Parkway" pushed his visibility past Memphis through strong airplay in other Southern rap hubs such as Atlanta, Birmingham, and Houston. Released in 2001, Down South Flava placed Gangsta Blac at the edge of wider national exposure as interest in Southern rappers continued to climb.
