Biography
Genus Ordinis Dei emerged from Crema, Italy, in 2011 as a symphonic death metal ensemble built around three professional music instructors—Nick K on vocals and guitars, Tommy Monticelli on guitars and orchestra, and Nico Pedrali on drums. The members, already working as educators, launched the project to fuse technical precision with sweeping narrative concepts and issued their self-produced debut The Middle independently in 2013, positioning it as the central installment of a planned trilogy. In 2014 they recruited Lacuna Coil bassist Marco Coti Zelati, both a friend and frequent tour companion, to oversee production, which resulted in a self-titled EP released in 2016 on the Danish label Mighty Music; the same imprint also reissued The Middle that year. A worldwide contract with U.S. label Eclipse Records followed in 2017, coinciding with the arrival of the group’s second album Great Olden Dynasty. That record achieved both critical and commercial recognition, included a guest vocal appearance by Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia on the track “Salem,” and was produced by Simone Mularoni of Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody and DGM. Continuing the overarching trilogy that began with The Middle, the band paired its ambitious storylines of love, betrayal, religious persecution, and human origins with high-concept visuals across subsequent releases: the 2019 album Glare of Deliverance, issued in 2020, chronicled a woman named Eleanor’s capture and interrogation by the Inquisition, while its 2023 prequel The Beginning extended the saga through similarly striking video accompaniment.
