Biography
Among the more engaging vocalists featured during American Idol’s third season, George Huff sustained his visibility through a career that moved fluidly between adult-oriented R&B and modern gospel. Poverty marked his early life in New Orleans, where days were divided between classroom studies and church activities. Church singing began at age five; informal recommendations quickly brought requests to perform at nearby congregations. He later enrolled at the University of Oklahoma under a full music scholarship, yet the award ran out midway through his junior year, leaving him short of tuition. To secure the remaining funds, he journeyed to Houston for the program’s regional tryouts, advanced through the competition, and reached the final five contestants before elimination.
Once the subsequent 50-city American Idol tour concluded, Huff evaluated recording proposals from four labels and ultimately signed with the Christian imprint Word. The 2004 holiday project My Christmas EP! preceded his first full-length album, Miracles, by one year; both entries climbed to number eight on Billboard’s gospel chart. Following Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of New Orleans in September 2005, he appeared at multiple benefit concerts and charity events. A second, self-titled contemporary-gospel album arrived via Koch in 2009. Although several years passed without new releases, Huff maintained an active performance schedule and often contributed backing vocals for fellow contestant Jennifer Hudson. In the mid-2010s he issued the independent R&B tracks “I Want You” and “Loving You (The Right Way).”
