Biography
Swiss-Italian composer Giona Ostinelli, born in Vacallo, Switzerland in 1986, developed an early command of both drums and piano before pursuing formal training at Berklee College of Music and the University of Southern California. During his time at the latter school he studied under Oscar-winning film composer Alan Silvestri. From the late 2000s onward he built an extensive catalog of television and film scores, contributing to Homeland, Community, Elementary, and 24, frequently in tandem with pianist, composer, and fellow Berklee graduate Sonya Belousova.
The duo’s mainstream breakthrough arrived in the late 2010s through their work on the fantasy series The Witcher, adapted in 2019 from the source books and video games. Their score for the show also encompassed earlier projects such as The Mist and The Romanoffs. Following the premiere, actor Joey Batey’s performance of the track “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” achieved widespread critical and popular acclaim, rising on the Billboard charts in early 2020. In January of that year the official soundtrack album appeared, gathering highlights from Ostinelli and Belousova’s wide-ranging, genre-blending music and incorporating further vocal performances by Batey and Declan DeBarra.
