Henry Jackman

English musician Henry Jackman has earned recognition for his contributions as a producer, programmer, and songwriter across pop and electronic music, yet his reputation rests primarily on his extensive body of work scoring films. Though a 2014 BAFTA nomination recognized his music for the biographical drama Captain Phillips, his strongest ties remain to action and animation projects. Scores blending playful and intense passages have accompanied major commercial successes such as the 2012 animated feature Wreck-It Ralph, the 2016 Marvel release Captain America: Civil War directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, and the 2019 family adventure Pokémon Detective Pikachu. He has sustained his partnership with the Russo brothers on further projects, among them the 2020 action film Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth and the 2021 drama Cherry featuring Tom Holland.

Henry Jackman entered the world in Hillingdon, a suburban district of London, as part of a household steeped in music-industry experience. His father, Andrew Pryce Jackman, performed as a keyboardist and arranger alongside Yes, Barbra Streisand, and Nanci Griffith. Uncle Gregg Jackman has worked as a sound engineer and producer with Barclay James Harvest, Seal, and Enya, while grandfather Bill Jackman contributed woodwind performances to the King’s Singers and other ensembles. Jackman pursued structured musical training that led him through St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir School, Eton, and Oxford University during the 1990s, years when the emerging underground rave culture also shaped his outlook. Early professional opportunities soon followed as producer or programmer for an eclectic roster that included Mike Oldfield, Coolio, Alphaville, and the Art of Noise. In the 2000s he issued his own ambient electronic recordings, beginning with the 2003 album Utopia on West One, then Transfiguration in 2005 and Acoustica in 2007, both released by KPM.

Jackman’s entry into film scoring occurred after Hans Zimmer invited him to assist on projects at the composer’s Los Angeles facility, handling programming and additional music. Those efforts encompassed The Da Vinci Code in 2006, Kung Fu Panda in 2008, and The Dark Knight in 2008. His first credited feature as primary composer arrived with the 2009 animated release Monsters vs. Aliens. Comfortable with both orchestral and electronic resources, he rapidly accumulated further assignments that included Gulliver’s Travels in 2010, Winnie the Pooh in 2011, and X-Men: First Class in 2011. The 2012 slate brought Wreck-It Ralph, while 2013 yielded Captain Phillips, the Tom Hanks biographical thriller that secured Jackman’s BAFTA nomination for Best Film Music.

Three major releases reached theaters in 2014: Big Hero 6, the Russo brothers’ Marvel entry Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, which he composed jointly with Matthew Margeson. Pixels arrived the next year, followed in 2016 by Captain America: Civil War, marking another collaboration with the Russos. That same year Jackman completed his first full video-game score for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, although he had supplied tracks, themes, and sound design for games as far back as the early-1990s Commodore 64 period. Uncharted 4 earned him a second BAFTA nomination, this time in the Games category for Best Music.

Subsequent work encompassed Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in 2017 along with the films Kong: Skull Island, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, again shared with Margeson. The following year brought franchise installments The Predator and Ralph Breaks the Internet. In 2019 his credits included Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Jumanji: The Next Level. He maintained his connection with the Russos on later productions such as the 2020 Chris Hemsworth vehicle Extraction and the 2021 Tom Holland crime drama Cherry.
