Biography
Becca Harvey, recording as girlpuppy, produces indie rock defined by its somber mood and strong melodic hooks, placing the work near Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, and Phoebe Bridgers. Several studio personnel previously employed by those artists have contributed to her sessions. After receiving favorable attention from major national publications for the project’s first EP in 2021, she delivered the debut album When I’m Alone the next year.
girlpuppy formed in Atlanta, Georgia, during the opening weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial single, “For You,” appeared in May 2020. Royal Mountain Records soon signed the act, and Harvey tracked the EP Swan with producer Marshall Vore, whose résumé includes Phoebe Bridgers and Ada Lea. Released in August 2021, the record resulted in support dates with the Districts and Matt Maltese. Harvey then turned to Doug Schadt, known for work with Maggie Rogers and Claud, to shape the brighter yet breakup-focused standalone single “I Miss When I Smelled Like You,” issued in June 2022. The full-length When I’m Alone was recorded with Alex G guitarist Sam Acchione, who had produced Tomberlin’s Projections EP in 2020. Henry Stoehr of Slow Pulp handled engineering and mixing, and Royal Mountain released the album in October 2022.
