Biography
Australian combo Moaning Lisa craft emotionally raw yet expansive indie rock drawing on '90s alt-pop, grunge, shoegaze, and punk. Emerging from Canberra in the late 2010s, they first issued two EPs on their own that led to a recording contract with Farmer & the Owl, the BMG-affiliated imprint. Their inaugural full-length, Something Like This But Not This, arrived in 2021 and expanded their reach, landing inside the Top 100 of Australia's ARIA chart. Three years later they returned with the darker-hued Fainter.
Charlie Versegi (vocals, bass), Hayley Manwaring (vocals, guitar), Ellen Chan (lead guitar), and Hayden Fritzlaff (drums) came together in 2016 as music students in Canberra. Their first recording, The Sweetest EP, appeared the next year. From the outset the quartet built a powerful live reputation marked by an energetically welcoming atmosphere. The 2018 single "Carrie (I Want a Girl)" referenced Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein and found particular favor within the LGBTQ+ community before turning up on their second independent EP later that year. Strong stage acclaim earned them a National Live Music Award and led to slots at Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival plus support dates with Mitski, Ride, and Midnight Oil.
Once signed to Farmer & the Owl, Moaning Lisa released Something Like This But Not This in 2021. Ben Moore produced the set, which highlighted the group's candid, introspective writing and layered sonic blend while reaching position 85 on the ARIA chart. Their next album, Fainter, followed in 2024 and adopted a more somber tone as it examined grief, social anxiety, and self-motivation.
