Biography
Another Michael's relaxed and ethereal style of indie folk-rock draws partial influence from Neil Young while echoing current acts such as Whitney and Fleet Foxes. After releasing an initial EP during 2015, the act put out its first full album, New Music and Big Pop, during 2021. On the more ambitious Wishes to Fulfill from 2023 and Pick Me Up, Turn Me Upside Down from 2024, they blended their foundational jangly approach with forays into R&B, AM pop, and adventurous psych-folk; these two related albums were drawn from identical recording sessions, with the former serving as a collection of single selections and the latter comprising additional album tracks.
Formed in Albany, New York during 2015, Another Michael originated as the individual project of Michael Doherty, a singer and multi-instrumentalist known for his angelic voice, who produced the act's first EP, Sans from 2016, independently. Another Michael had incorporated multi-instrumentalists Nick Sebastiano and Alenni Davis by the point when Doherty moved to West Philadelphia in 2017. After inking a deal with Topshelf Records, the group released the EP Land around the middle of 2018 and achieved modest streaming success via the soul-tinged ballad "About."
They continued to broaden and polish their sonic palette, releasing New Music and Big Pop as their debut album after Land. Crafted by Sebastiano along with his then-housemate Scoops Dardaris, the album came out via Topshelf and Run for Cover Records at the start of 2021. The band's second LP, Wishes to Fulfill, came out once more through Run for Cover during September 2023. Crediting production once more to Sebastiano and Dardaris in addition to the group—which had grown by adding multi-instrumentalist Jacob Crofoot—the record ventured toward classic rock and woozy R&B even as it remained rooted in their folk-rock foundation. The adaptable follow-up album Pick Me Up, Turn Me Upside Down, which captured the same sessions yet focused on more experimental album tracks in contrast to the singles-oriented Wishes to Fulfill, surfaced in May 2024, under a year afterward.
