Queen of Jeans emerged from Philadelphia in 2015, bringing together vocalist and primary songwriter Miriam Devora, guitarist Matheson Glass, and bassist Nina Scotto. Their name playfully referenced the South Philly denim outlet King of Jeans. Although each had performed with other local acts, Devora sought to front her own songs, and the pair joined her project. Early the following year the trio issued the self-titled debut EP on Third Uncle Records in the U.S. and Super Fan 99 Records in the U.K. Drummer Patrick Wall soon came aboard, and the group refined its live presentation through regional shows and self-booked tours. After debuting at SXSW in March 2017, Queen of Jeans supported Balance & Composure and From Indian Lakes on the road. Top Shelf Records then signed the band, leading to the March 2018 full-length Dig Yourself. A tour with the Menzingers preceded the mid-2019 arrival of If You're Not Afraid, I'm Not Afraid, by which point Scotto had left the lineup. The group’s output mixes hook-driven, yearning indie pop with surf rock, dream pop, and psychedelic accents; reverb stayed central to the aesthetic, yet the second album showed a clearer sense of focus.
