Biography
The indie rock outfit Now, Now originated in Blaine, Minnesota during the mid-2000s yet established its operations in Minneapolis, where the group blends acoustic guitar, synths, and fuzzy textures rooted in '90s alt rock with the intensity of Midwestern emo-pop. Their initial output carried a ruminative, anxious, and dusky character until Saved arrived in 2018 to sharpen the approach into something more emotionally direct and streamlined in production.
Cacie Dalager, handling vocals, guitar, and keys, first connected with drummer Bradley Hale through their high school marching band in the area; the pair soon began composing material and drew in a shifting circle of friends and relatives to launch live performances.
Under the earlier moniker Now, Now Every Children, Dalager and Hale completed the full-length Cars, which Afternoon Records issued in 2008. Guitarist Jess Abbott entered the lineup in 2009, after which the trio issued their Now, Now debut, the Neighbors EP, through No Sleep Records in 2010; its title track received placement in a 2011 episode of the ABC series Grey's Anatomy. The Dead Oaks EP followed later that same year, and the album Threads appeared on Trans Records in 2012, marking the band's first entry on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.
Abbott had already self-released the solo album Capes in 2011, which No Sleep Records reissued in 2014; its successor, Tancred, emerged in 2013 via Topshelf Recordings. Hale launched his own electro-pop endeavor Sombear and delivered the 2013 album Love You in the Dark on Trans. Abbott later adopted Tancred as a performing name, moved to Polyvinyl, and released Out of the Garden in 2016. Once Abbott turned primary attention to solo work, Dalager and Hale resumed activity as a duo and issued the first Now, Now recordings in five years, beginning with a sequence of singles in May 2017 that included "SGL," "Yours," and "AZ." The resulting third album, Saved—their first in six years—reflected a shift toward a more open and hook-oriented style.
