Zac Farro, drummer for Paramore, channels his exploratory impulses into Halfnoise, a side endeavor that fuses propulsive indie rock grooves with bright 1960s melodies and layered, atmospheric textures. The project draws from an eclectic palette that spans the Beach Boys, Tame Impala, Sigur Ros, and U2, and it took shape primarily after Farro’s widely noted exit from Paramore in 2010. In the ensuing years he refined the band’s sonic identity, including a seven-month stay in New Zealand to track its debut album, before returning to Paramore in 2016. Halfnoise has continued to command equal creative attention from Farro, who regularly inserts its material into Paramore’s live sets.

Born in New Jersey in 1990, Farro spent his formative years in the Nashville suburb of Franklin, Tennessee, where he helped establish the emo rock group Paramore with his guitarist brother Josh Farro, vocalist Hayley Williams, and bassist Jeremy Davis. Beginning at age 14, he toured and recorded with the band through three major releases. Creative and personal divergences prompted the Farro brothers to depart in 2010 so they could pursue individual work. Farro soon started developing his own material alongside friend Jason Clarke; the atmospheric track “Hide Your Eyes” surfaced online before Clarke exited, leaving Farro to continue alone. In 2012 he issued a self-titled EP, produced with Daniel James and spotlighting the song “Free the House.” Farro and James then relocated to New Zealand for an extended recording session that yielded Halfnoise’s first full-length effort. Spanning seven months and emerging in 2014, Volcano Crowe featured Farro handling vocals and most instrumentation while incorporating dynamic percussion, guitars, bass, keyboards, and electronics; the set contained the singles “Mountain” and “Hurricane Love.”

Farro resettled in Tennessee, spent the following year on the road, and then turned to Halfnoise’s second album. Issued in 2016, Sudden Feeling highlighted a brighter, synth-driven pop aesthetic colored by 1960s psychedelia and included the tracks “Sudden Feeling” and “Know the Feeling.” During the same stretch he reestablished contact with former Paramore colleagues Williams and guitarist Taylor York, ultimately rejoining the band full-time for its 2017 release After Laughter. While touring with Paramore across 2017 and 2018, Farro frequently performed Halfnoise compositions during those concerts. The Flowerss EP surfaced in 2018 and featured the songs “All That Is Love” and “She Said.”
