Biography
Embodying a sleek brand of modern pop steeped in romantic yearning, Nightly first captured widespread attention when their 2016 breakup anthem “XO” spread rapidly online. Following several EPs, the pair issued their inaugural full-length album, night, love you, in 2020. Additional atmospheric material surfaced the next year via the companion release night, love you [Alt EP].
Nightly originated in Nashville, Tennessee, during 2016 as the creative outlet for cousins Joey Beretta and Jonathan Capeci, who had already begun collaborating musically well before either could legally drive. Raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, amid musically rich homes, the pair purchased matching electric guitars at ages 13 and 14, respectively, and started performing in various local ensembles across Philadelphia and New Jersey. Although they paused their musical pursuits while attending college, both dropped out within two years and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, intent on pursuing music professionally. They subsequently spent several years in the band Dinner and a Suit, which toured extensively—including multiple appearances on the Vans Warped Tour—issued an album and an EP, and ultimately disbanded near the close of 2015. That same year the cousins debuted their new endeavor, Nightly, whose name derived from a texting shorthand for “Goodnight, Love You.” They wrote the breakup track “XO,” uploaded it, and watched as it accumulated hundreds of thousands of streams and attracted Nashville radio play, quickly elevating the duo’s profile. Following showcase performances, they secured a contract with Interscope Records, which put out the four-song EP Honest in October 2016. Extensive road work ensued, with shared bills alongside Ke$ha, the All-American Rejects, and The Struts. In February 2018, while supporting rapper NF on tour, Nightly released “Miss You Like Hell,” later featured on the EP The Sound of Your Voice. The 2019 EP Talk You Down arrived alongside the single “This Time Last Year.” Their long-awaited studio debut, night, love you, finally emerged in early 2020. February 2021 brought the reworked companion night, love you [Alt EP], containing fresh versions of four tracks, among them stripped-down renditions of “Not Like You,” “So Sly,” and “Summer.” Further independent singles appeared throughout 2022: “On Your Sleeve,” “Dirty White Chucks,” and “I Wish You Loved Me.”
