Biography
Got a Girl emerged as an American indie pop duo when producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, known for his work with Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, and Handsome Boy Modeling School, joined forces with singer and actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, recognized for her roles in Smashed and Live Free or Die Hard. Their paths crossed during the 2010 production of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, where Winstead took on a supporting acting part while Nakamura contributed to the score. Though Winstead had no prior professional music experience, Nakamura found himself drawn to her smooth, dulcet voice, and the pair discovered common ground in their affection for '60s French pop, café jazz, psychedelia, and hip-hop. From that foundation they began testing musical ideas together, excited by how the experiments unfolded. An album of slinky, sophisticated pop songs soon took shape, its retro sensibility merging with Nakamura's signature hip-hop-influenced beats. Under the Got a Girl moniker they first offered the single "You and Me" in May 2013, followed by the full-length debut I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now in July 2014.
