Gothic Tropic originated as the creative project of Cecilia Della Peruti, an Italian-American musician, singer, and songwriter. New Jersey served as her birthplace, where a household filled with music surrounded her due to her jazz-composing father and opera-singing mother. At eleven years old, she relocated to Los Angeles, sparking an interest in innovative pop figures through exposure to sounds from Bauhaus and Alan Vega alongside Prince and David Bowie. During adolescence, she picked up multiple instruments and participated in several punk bands. By her early twenties, having mastered various instruments, Peruti took on session work, teaming up and appearing with performers including Beck and Charli XCX. She dedicated spare moments to composing personal songs aimed at launching a modest side endeavor. Eventually accumulating sufficient material prompted her to organize performances, with her initial show occurring inside a shuttered apparel shop along Sunset Boulevard. In 2011, she issued her first output, the Awesome Problems EP, which blended punk energy with psychedelic touches and '90s alternative rock influences. Subsequently, the endeavor paused as Peruti joined American indie pop singer BØRNS on a two-year tour. That period allowed her to gather additional songs suitable for a complete album. Upon returning to California, she captured these concepts alongside producer and acquaintance Todd Dahlhoff. Fast or Feast emerged as the resulting record in mid-2017 through Old Flame Records, marking a shift in sound by merging R&B rhythms with lo-fi indie rock and dream pop elements.
